SumHan: Preserving Korea’s Hanji Heritage

Like a whisper from centuries past, a single sheet of Hanji carries the soul of Korean artistry, tradition, and environmental harmony.

In today’s era of Hallyu, where K-drama, K-pop, K-beauty, and K-food captivate global audiences, there exists an even deeper cultural treasure waiting to be celebrated: the art of Hanji, Korea’s exquisite handmade paper. For centuries, Hanji has not merely been paper; it has been the canvas for calligraphy and painting, the foundation for furniture, and even an architectural element in traditional homes. Its exceptional durability, natural beauty, and eco-friendly qualities make it a cultural asset that embodies Korea’s rich heritage.

Yet, despite its timeless charm, the art of Hanji faces a challenge. With master craftsmen aging and fewer young artisans stepping forward, this delicate craft is at risk of fading into the background of modern trends. Recognizing the urgency to preserve this living legacy, we, Anne and Karl, founded SumHan. As dedicated students of esteemed Hanji artisans Tae Won-ae and Oh Myung-hwan, we have seen firsthand the passion, precision, and profound cultural wisdom that each Hanji masterpiece encapsulates.

At SumHan, we are more than a business, we are a movement. We strive to build a bridge between the past and the present, between East and West, by introducing authentic Hanji craft products to Australia and beyond. Our mission is to foster a global community of Hanji enthusiasts, artists, and cultural appreciators who share our love for this unique art form.

Join us in our journey to preserve, celebrate, and share the timeless beauty of Hanji. Together, we can ensure that this invaluable cultural heritage continues to inspire and thrive for generations to come.
