What Is Hanji?

The Beauty of Korea’s Natural Paper

In a world of fast production and synthetic materials, Hanji stands as a quiet symbol of patience, purity, and purpose. But what exactly is Hanji, and why is it so special?

Hanji is traditional Korean handmade paper, created from the inner bark of the mulberry tree (dak). Unlike ordinary paper, Hanji is made without chemicals or machines. It is soaked, pulped, hand-stretched, and dried naturally in the sun or wind, a process that can take several days but leaves behind something truly timeless.

What makes Hanji unique is not just how it’s made, but what it represents. It breathes. It holds warmth. It softens light and absorbs stories. Hanji is durable yet delicate, strong yet soulful. For centuries, it’s been used not only for writing and art, but for lanterns, windows, and even clothing.

At SumHan, we honour this tradition by working with local artisans who create chemical-free, naturally dried Hanji, entirely by hand. Our pieces are made slowly, with care, intention, and deep respect for nature.

So when you touch Hanji, you’re not just holding paper.
You’re touching the earth, the wind, the heart of tradition.
